FALC is partnering with FRESH Local Ice Cream in Downtown Cary to choose an artist to create a mural for the inside of their store.

The artist will be selected through a Popular Vote conducted in the store and on their social media. FALC will be promoting this contest as well.

FALC members can submit their mural ideas by registering HERE to be considered for the wall inside the Fresh Ice Cream Store. Ideas can be sketches, paint, pastels, colored pencil marker, digital designs, or however you can get your idea across.

Mural Size:  about 3' wide x 5' high.

Theme:  Ice Cream incorporated with Cary Downtown Icons. (think the Clock, the Fountain, the Park, The Arts Center etc) . To get a good idea of what they are looking for, visit the Fresh location in Downtown Apex. Feel free to visit the Cary Store to see the space(and check out their delicious ice cream! Midnight Brownie is my favorite).

They are looking for selfie moments!

Works accepted must be for sale. Works sold from the show will be replaced with a work from the Waitlist. Please review FALC Display Guidelines attached to the bottom of this document.

    Guidelines have changed:

Size: The Mayton has fully installed the hanging system, so this allows for smaller works. The maximum size remains at 54” on any one length. The minimum size is now 5x7 (or 35 square inches) without frame.

Framing: In addition to the traditional frame or gallery wrapping, alternative professional presentation options will be considered. These may include float framing, rod & wire or mounted on stretchers. However, for art using non-traditional framing, we will require an additional photo showing presentation when the work is submitted, allowing the submission committee to fully consider the work.

Acceptance Fee: A nominal charge of $15 for accepted work will be required. This will not only cover printing costs but provide the opportunity to further encourage foot traffic to the exhibit through marketing and maybe even a nice social for this exhibit.

Please Read carefully all the way to the end of the guidelines to ensure your work complies. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in refusal to hang your art even if the art itself has been accepted.

    Eligibility:

All members of FALC are eligible to submit three pieces of 2D artwork in any medium.

Canvases must be framed or gallery wrapped 1.5” deep, edges deep and painted - integral to the composition preferred but solid painted allowed.

    FALC Display Guidelines:

All work must be totally dry and ready to hang.

Ready to hang means the following:

    Dates and times

    • Respect the delivery and pick up dates and times.  Non-compliance may mean refusal of entry from the current show and the next show. FALC Volunteers are volunteering their time. Please be respectful.

    Labeling

    • Work delivered must be physically labelled on the back with a tag, business card or handwritten label on the frame with the Artist’s name and contact information. This is to help us get your work to you if needed.

    Hanging wire:

    • Use heavy gauge wire.
    • No sawtooth hangers.
    • Screw eyes large enough to support the weight of the piece.
    • Please tape the raw ends of the wire to prevent injury

    Framing/matting

    • Work on paper must be matted and framed. Large works (over 22 inches x 30 inches or 66 square inches total) should be framed using plastic, not glass, because of the weight.
    • Work on canvas may be unframed if the edges are painted as an integral part of the work. For The Mayton gallery wrapped canvas must be at 1.5” deep or more.

    Appropriateness of subject

    • FALC displays art in various facilities. Town of Cary facilities require work appropriate for a family setting. Not all FALC venues are TOC facilities, but if it is at the Page Walker, Cary Art Center, The Senior Center or other TOC facility, please be aware FALC must follow TOC guidelines. Look at the specific Show Description for these details.

    Liability:

    • All entries will be handled with the best care possible, but FALC, its members, and the hosting facility shall not be responsible for loss or damage of any cause. By entering any FALC exhibition or venue the entering member agrees to abide by these rules.

    FALC requirements

    • FALC requires a 25% (of the selling price) donation on works sold from these venues.
    • FALC has the right to refuse work deemed inappropriate or presenting unmanageable display problems.
    • FALC reserves the right to change these rules at any time.

February 11, 2023 Artist RoundTable – The Art Spirit by Robert Henri

Robert Henri was a great American artist and teacher who thought outside the box for his time. He valued mastery of his medium, but not in the manner of a rigid academic style thinking that stifled natural creativity for an artist. He pioneered the Ashcan School of American Realism. Henri attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and went on to study in Paris under William-Adolphe Bouguereau. He embraced impressionism while in Paris.

He eventually went against academic art, including impressionism and pioneered a fresh outlook on creating a painting.  In a sense he was ‘the father of independent painting”, for this reason and his thoughtful writings to his students I have picked this book as our first book to use for a discourse on art.

Join us on Saturday February 11, 2023, in room M10 at the Cary Arts Center 3-4:30 pm. You are encouraged to read the book – The Art Spirit, but nevertheless even if you don’t, come and enjoy a lively Artist RoundTable discussion about art inspired by this book. Please bring guests, as members and non-members are invited.

The book is available in libraries, as well as online to buy - as a book or as an audio recording.
