Artist's Bio
Andrea Frank grew up in South Jersey. She loved the “wide open spaces” of her youth as well as “the close proximity to Philadelphia, New York City and the Jersey Shore.” Andrea has always been interested in art, and has dabbled in charcoals, pastels, batiks, and now, painting. Her passion for creative expression was especially encouraged by her father, who was also an artist. They would go to weekly art classes after her father came home from work at night. Andrea always had a flair for color, which seemed to come naturally to her.

Andrea is a Gemini, and while she loves the arts, she also loves the sciences, especially biology. Andrea went undergrad at the University of Maine in Bangor and earned a BA in Zoology. She then went on to medical school at Des Moines University and was awarded a Doctor of Osteopathy in 1986. Andrea is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Lipidology. For more than 25 years, she had her own practice where she enjoyed improving her patients’ health and longevity. She is semi-retired, but continues to work part-time doing Telemedicine and helping people in an urgent care setting online.

Andrea and her husband Alan lived in New Jersey until 2012, then moved to Tampa, Florida and remained there for seven years before concluding that “it was just too hot and humid!” In 2019, the couple packed up and moved to Cary, North Carolina - the happy medium between a northern and southern climate! Andrea says, “Alan and I are both over 60, so we found a wonderful active adult community and fell in love with the neighborhood and the surrounding area here.” Andrea says that her two favorite things about North Carolina so far are the winding roads with new sights around every corner and the weather!

Andrea says, “Painting has become more of my focus lately as it distracts me from the current political climate and health crisis.” Her inspiration to paint comes from the beauty that surrounds her. Colors and shadows fascinate her. Andrea says, “I can spend hours creating a warm and calming feeling on canvas. My hope is that when people see one of my paintings, they will want to be transported inside that image to relax in the moment.”

Andrea likes to “work on a painting until it just feels right.” She strives for realism with an impressionistic touch. Several famous artists have inspired her. In particular, Andrea loves “the colors and shapes of Vincent Van Gogh and the architectural style of Edward Hopper.” Since moving to the Raleigh area, Andrea has become involved in several local art groups and she continues to take art classes when she can.

Andrea says, “Art is such a wonderful activity for me. I can spend hours painting and not think about food, water, or the world. Currently, I’m exploring “Plein Air” painting (which is the French term for ‘painting outdoors.’) I love being outside in a serene natural setting working on landscapes of local scenery with friends.”
