Artist's Bio
I was born in a small agrarian town in southeastern North Carolina in 1950 to a family of three older brothers, an artist mother, and a veterinarian father. Some key highlights of my post-secondary life… * completed an A.B. degree in psychology from UNC at Chapel Hill and a master's in counseling from N.C. State University * married at the age of 23 and, after completing a master's degree, became a college counselor at Fayetteville Technical Community College * took a nine year sabbatical to care for and nurture my three young children * joined Cape Fear Studios in Fayetteville in the late 1980s, working primarily in pottery and sculpture * moved to Georgia in 1993 where I began a 20 year career in mentel health and became a Licensed Professional Counselor * returned to North Carolina after retiring and lived in Cary to be near my daughter and her husband * became a live-in granny nanny to my two grandsons for four years * decided it was time to live alone again and to pursue my artistic interests much more actively. Since childhood, creating art has been a significant part of my life and continues to be a most rewarding source of meaning and growth.
Artist's Statement
Albert Einstein said, "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.” I strive to inspire mystery, imagination, spiritual connection, comfort, and personal insight in my work. Currently I prefer to work in acrylic paint for its flexibility toward achieving and sometimes accidentally discovering the effects that I want. I especially enjoy using intuitive painting techniques because of the challenge and mystery they hold. While I never know what the finished work will look like… sometimes abstract, sometimes realistic, the process is always an adventure! The ultimate purpose of my work is to facilitate a sense of connection between the viewer and some part of their personal world or an awareness that they find significantly meaningful. For me, this is art’s true purpose.
