Koenig

Sara Koenig is a multimedia artist and physician practicing in Cary, NC. She has worked in a variety of mediums over 3 decades including metal clay, fiber, and photography. Currently she prefers to work with acrylic paint and collage on canvas or panels. She received her undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College, in Bronxville, NY in 1996.

I am a abstract mixed media artist living in Durham, NC. My work is heavy influenced by the study of history, medicine, and architecture. I start my paintings with invigorating bold colors, then use collage to create a richly layered world of artifacts and illustration, text, images, and patterns. Marking making and glazes finish the piece. I make most of my collage materials myself, using gel plate monoprinting on a variety of papers or digitizing hand drawn figures or script. Most of the images that I use are sourced from various digital archives in the open domain. Arches are a common theme in my work; they represent the promise of something only partial seen on the other side, strength, and shelter. I enjoy incorporating organic shapes and patterns in the final stages of a piece, representing the microscopic world that lives at a scale too small for our eyes to see.
