Richard Carter is an award-wining photographer who has traveled extensively in the US and Canada, as well as Australia, Europe, Africa, Mexico, and Central America. In addition to photography, his interests include birdwatching, hiking, and trains. Mr. Carter currently resides in North Carolina with his wife, Beatriz, and their cat Apollo.

I have always been an explorer. To me, art involves searching, studying, and investigating. It is the process of establishing connections and relationships. What fascinates me most about photography is the idea of combining seemingly unrelated items in the confines of the frame, thereby compelling these objects to form an implied association. Through these virtual connections, randomness gives way to patterns and the disordered becomes organized. My preferred photographic subjects are architecture and landscapes. Although these topics can be drastically different, I prefer to think there are great similarities between them. Both have strong elements of harmony, symmetry, and balance. I also enjoy creating small “landscapes” from abstract items and extractions of larger subjects. Regardless of the size, however, it is the careful combination of shapes, patterns, and details that offer endless fascination. The overall themes of my compositions are tranquility and isolation. Most of my photographs do not contain people. I am a self-described introvert and I believe there is great beauty and comfort in solitude. I also am a firm believer in the idea that quality is always better than quantity. Above all, I hope my images express authenticity and a deeper appreciation for the world around me.
