Hughes Miller

After graduating from NC State’s School of Design, I was a graphic designer for many years before becoming a full-time artist. A North Carolina native, I enjoy living in the Triangle area and part-time at Sunset Beach, not far from where I grew up in southeastern NC. I paint in both home studios, inspired by my love of nature, especially the coastal environment. My oil paintings feature unspoiled vistas — calming and rare — deserted beaches, rolling waves, tranquil marshes and colorful clouds in vast skies. Working from observation, memory and imagination, I mix and blend layers of color on the canvas to render the landscape in a nontraditional, contemporary way. Derived from familiar places dear to me, my paintings are personal interpretations, impressions of everyday nature — where the colors of sky, earth and water converge on the horizon.
