Artist's Bio
Maggie Watkins, a celebrated artist whose work evokes an authentic southern charm, was born on the outskirts of Raleigh, North Carolina. Her art, an emotional canvas of her southern lifestyle, captures the essence of its people, landscapes, and animals with a distinctive flair. Classic techniques and innovations meld in her creations, where adept use of lighting, color temperature, and expressive brushwork bring her subjects vividly to life. Growing up enveloped by the serene beauty of rural farmland and inter-coastal waterways, her childhood was defined by summers spent fishing, shrimp farming, and experiencing the simplicity and rawness of nature. These bittersweet memories profoundly influence her work, where the soulful gaze of an animal or the fleeting shadows of a sunset reflect her deep connection with her home. From an early age, Maggie was surrounded by art, influenced by distant relatives who explored various art forms. Despite this familial backdrop, it wasn't initially art but healthcare that became her career path. As a self-employed nurse, Maggie dedicated much of her life to nurturing others, often finding parallels between her work in healthcare and the nurturing nature of art. Yet, amid the long hours and dedication to nursing, her artistic spirit never dimmed, leading her to self-educate through workshops with renowned artists like Jeremy Sams, Bill Davidson, and Jennifer Gennari. These experiences rekindled her passion, teaching her to meld classical techniques with her own innovations in oils, acrylics, watercolors, and mixed media. For Maggie, art stands as a profound language, able to communicate untold stories and unexpressed emotions. Her vibrant landscapes and heartfelt portraits reflect personal narratives and values—honesty, warmth, and a deep-seated respect for nature, life and it's Creator. This worldview has attracted a diverse audience, eager for the personal connection her artwork promises. Away from the easel, Maggie finds solace in gardening, hiking, and exploring the coastal and mountain charms of North Carolina. These pastimes not only enrich her art but also balance her demanding nursing profession, which she plans to retire from soon. With aspirations of becoming a full-time artist, her future promises more immersive explorations within her art. For Maggie Watkins, art is more than a profession—it is a compelling narrative of shared experiences, calling to those who seek the extraordinary in the everyday.
Artist's Statement
As an artist deeply rooted in the enchanting landscapes of rural North Carolina, my work is a tapestry woven from the vibrant threads of my upbringing among storytellers, photographers, musicians, and outdoor enthusiasts. Nature and wildlife have always spoken to my soul, instilling in me a profound love for their beauty and a driving force in my creative journey. A scene captures my attention when it embodies a story waiting to be told, an emotion yearning to be felt. This magnetic pull towards a setting is what fuels my desire to translate its essence into a visual narrative that invites viewers to become part of the tale. My artistic inspiration springs from the interplay of light and color in nature, the dance of shadows across a landscape, and the silent whispers of the world around me by my Creator. This synergy of elements impels me to capture the fleeting moments where emotion, spirit and environment converge. In my technique, I embrace a range of mediums and styles, letting each piece dictate its own journey. Through energetic brushwork, the capture of dancing light, and balance of color temperature, I strive to craft paintings that are unique to each viewer. My aim is not merely to replicate what I see, but to convey a visceral connection of emotion, mood, and energy, drawing the viewer into a heartfelt experience that words cannot encapsulate. Ultimately, my art is a spiritual extension of myself, a visual diary of moments and emotions shared openly with the world. It is my hope that through this expression, each viewer finds a story, a feeling, a part of their own journey mirrored within the layers of paint and imagination.
