Davis Petelinz

Mixed media artist. Art Instructor. Art Consultant.

In my mixed media art practice, I revel in the freedom to create using an extensive variety of methods to achieve my vision. Beginning with an idea, a question, or the desire to explore a technique, I rarely sketch, preferring to just 'dive in' to see where my chosen media will lead. My "Ancestral Stories" series explores themes of adornment, gathering, and connection to the Earth. Each wall hanging features clay pieces and natural elements such as stones, shells, brass beads, raffia, feathers, twigs, and cotton threads within niches inside custom built rectangular MDF boxes. This series also features my original, textured low-fire clay elements often enhanced with metallic oxides, acrylic paints and inks. In other series, I explore painted paper techniques such as marbling, paste paper, stenciling and gelatin mono printing, often incorporating them into collage onto MDF panels or spun bamboo plates in various original design configurations. My goal is to interpret these elements to resonate with the viewer as objects at once unusual and familiar; evoking ancestral connections and contemporary design, speaking across cultures to tap the deep well of the universal.
