Artist's Bio
Alvaro Maury is a glass artist who creates unique pieces using stained glass painting, sandblasting and screen printing on glass. After a long career in semiconductors research and development, Alvaro has dedicated himself to the world of glass art. His expertise on stained glass painting has been developed under the expert direction of world famous artists such as Diego Tolomelli, of IKO Studio in Italy, Luis Gianera, of Gianera Studio in Argentina, and James Cockerill, of HALTglass Studio in England. Alvaro is a member of the American Glass Guild, and he is based in Hillsborough, North Carolina. One of the artist’s early work was the creation of several stained glass panels for the Harry Potter attraction in Universal Studios Beijing. Some other commissions Alvaro has worked on include a fireplace screen with stained glass, religious glass panels and restorations, painted panels with backlight, screen printed images of people and pets, and many other works.
Artist's Statement
My work explores the relationship between light, glass, and painted image. I am fascinated by the way a transparent material can simultaneously carry color, reflect light, transmit light, and transform an image as the viewer moves around it. I work primarily with stained glass and kiln-fired glass paints, using traditional techniques of tracing, matting, staining, and enameling while also experimenting with contemporary methods such as screen printing and layered imagery. Rather than treating paint as a surface applied to glass, I see the glass itself as an active participant in the work. The final image emerges through the interaction of pigment, glass, heat, and light. My background in science and technology has strongly influenced the way I approach glass painting. I am particularly interested in the chemistry and physics that occur during firing—the way pigments react to temperature, how color develops within the glass, and how subtle changes in firing conditions can alter the character of an image. This technical curiosity becomes part of my artistic process: experimentation, observation, and unexpected results are all sources of discovery. I am drawn to imagery that suggests nature, memory, and transformation. I often simplify forms and use contrast, texture, and transparency to create images that change with illumination. Natural and architectural forms may appear familiar at first, but the properties of glass allow them to become something less literal—an image suspended between painting and light. For me, stained glass painting is a conversation between control and chance. I carefully construct the image, but the kiln ultimately participates in its creation. The heat alters the materials, fuses layers together, and sometimes produces results that could not have been completely predicted. My goal is to create work in which the image and the material are inseparable—where glass is not simply the surface on which a painting exists, but the medium through which the painting becomes light.
