Carnes

Keri Carnes (b. 1990) is an artist based in Durham, NC, where she lives with her husband and children. Her artistic practice is deeply influenced by her roles as a foster, adoptive, step, and biological parent. Keri's work examines the pivotal moments that shape our identities and construct our internal narratives, particularly through the perspectives of childhood and family dynamics. Drawing inspiration from both classical and contemporary representational art, she aims to integrate traditional artistic techniques with aspects of modern life. Her work has been showcased in various exhibitions across North Carolina and Connecticut, as well as in online platforms.

We all have crucial moments that shape who we are. Sometimes we share these experiences, sometimes they are personal. These moments influence our views on fate, resilience, joy, grief, community, and loneliness. They color our memories, shape our behavior, and form bonds with others. As a mother in various capacities, I've witnessed and experienced many intimate moments. My work aims to capture both the diversity and universality of these stories. It focuses on our internal narratives, using traditional painting methods to connect history with the present. Painting from life and painting from photographs, as well as direct and indirect painting methods, are areas of interest to me. By exploring the interaction between traditional and contemporary subjects and techniques I hope to see where historical and modern elements can converge.
