Jen Blakeslee is a North Carolina based artist, and arts educator primarily working in clay, but also practiced in printmaking and many other forms of craft working. She draws her background in Archaeology and Conservation with emphasis on material culture to create functional and sculptural ceramics. Jen is currently working with ceramics, assemblage and exploration of her culture through folk art, symbolism and ritual art
Artist's Statement
Jen Blakeslee explores mixed media materials (primarily ceramics) to tell stories that are both ancient and familiar. She creates objects in clay that are altered and decorated using the age-old techniques of encaustic, or wax painting and terra sigillata, literally “clay bearing little images,” a ceramics practice that has been in use for millennia. By texturing her work, referencing natural forms, and using ancient techniques, Jen creates contemporary art that investigates humanity’s historical relationship with nature, material culture and belief.
