Artist's Statement
I create ambiguous landscapes shaped by weather, light, and atmosphere. Working in both oil and acrylic paint, I use elements such as wind, fog, clouds, and cold to build a sense of energy, depth, and movement within each scene. These atmospheric conditions allow me to simultaneously obscure and reveal parts of the landscape, creating spaces that feel both familiar and elusive. My work explores the relationship between memory and place. Growing up in the Appalachian Mountains, I have been continually surrounded by their presence and captivated by the mystery, history, and personal memories they seem to hold. Rather than depicting specific locations, I paint landscapes that evoke the experience of remembering—a place that is recognizable yet indistinct, lingering just beyond clarity. Through softened forms, shifting light, and atmospheric veils, I aim to create images that function like memories themselves: fragmented, faded at the edges, and open to interpretation. By balancing observation with ambiguity, I invite viewers to inhabit a space between the seen and the remembered, where landscape becomes both a physical environment and a repository of memory.
