Artist's Bio
I am Gary Fried, born in NY, NY, and currently living in Cary. I graduated from UNC-CH while majoring in Sociology as well as taking -several semesters of in-studio painting with Professor Dennis Zaborosky (1986-87). I am also a self-taught artist. I am now retired from Central Regional Hospital, where I was employed as a creative expressive arts specialist for 15 years. Currently I am painting in my home studio. I paint in an introspective abstract expressionistic style. I’m a past member of the Durham Arts Guild, where I exhibited in 2 past juried shows and several members shows. I’ve never actively tried to sell my work; however, by happenstance I sold 2 abstract pieces from my home (estate sale) and was commissioned by a co- worker to do a portrait of her using pastels. I feel it’s time to expand and share my artistic vision by exhibiting my work with the public.
Artist's Statement
I create my art to express my inner mind's visions using color and form in oils and acrylics. The process of painting creates a timeless space for me where the usual boundaries of perception dissolve. I become engrossed in my work, thus the work becomes me and I the work. This fusion brings me enhanced emotional connection with myself and to exhibit my work is important because the viewer will interpret my work and connect to it emotionally learning a new way of seeing themselves and the world. Currently my subject matter is mainly introspective abstract expressionist. My creative process involves imagination and intuition emerging on the canvas. I generally don’t plan the outcome -- the paintings emerge as they do. I select the colors and general shapes. My inspiration to paint comes from the works of Vincent Van Gogh.
