Artist's Bio
Melissa Yao-Gill is a watercolor artist who loves painting pets and capturing the details that make each one unique. Working primarily in watercolor on Ampersand Aquabord, she enjoys using small brushes to carefully paint individual hairs, markings, eyes, and expressions. Melissa combines her love of detailed painting with a playful imagination. Along with traditional pet portraits, she creates custom, fun, and unexpected portraits that place pets in silly costumes and imaginative settings. Every piece is meant to be unique—she never repeats a costume or background, making each portrait a one-of-a-kind creation. For Melissa, painting is about both precision and fun. She enjoys spending time on the little details while also playing with color, personality, and ideas. Her goal is to create portraits that feel personal to each pet and bring a smile to the people who love them.
Artist's Statement
I love painting pets because every animal has its own personality and details that make it unmistakably itself. I especially enjoy working with small brushes to capture individual hairs, markings, eyes, expressions, and the other little details that make each pet unique. But I also love having fun with the idea of a pet portrait. Along with detailed portraits that celebrate an animal just as they are, I create custom portraits that put pets into silly costumes, imaginative settings, and unexpected situations. I enjoy taking an idea and turning it into something personal, playful, and a little bit different. I never repeat a costume or background, because I want every portrait to be as unique as the pet it represents. I work primarily in watercolor on Ampersand Aquabord. Watercolor gives me the ability to build up the fine details I love while also allowing me to play with color and create something lively and expressive. Whether I'm painting a beloved pet realistically or dressing one up in a completely ridiculous costume, my goal is the same: to create something that captures the individuality of the animal and makes its owner smile.
