Artist's Bio
Caitlin Cary is a Raleigh-based fiber artist working in a style she calls “Needleprint,” a sewn collage technique by which she creates intricate collages from repurposed upholstery samples and scraps affixed to stiffened canvas with various methods of freehand machine sewing. Caitlin is committed to a re-use aesthetic wherein as few materials as possible are bought new. She finds inspiration in Durham’s Scrap Exchange, and also loves the relationships she has developed with other “fabric folk” (interior designers, upholsterers and textile vendors) who relish keeping beautiful materials out of landfills and so lend their castoffs to her work. Caitlin also deeply enjoys the sense of being “in conversation” with all of the fabulous artists who (inadvertently) contribute to her work through textile design.
The “Piers” series flirts with abstraction as it concentrates on the underpinnings of structures and invites the viewer to become meditative about the beautiful and complicated repeating geometric patterns that undergird the built environment.
Caitlin invites you to visit her at the Pocket Gallery (which also functions as her working studio) Wednesday through Sunday from noon to six. She is available for commission by appointment. She's also an (occasionally) performing musician, singer and songwriter with a somewhat storied musical past.
Artist's Statement
I am a proccess-driven artist, most often motivated by materials, always re-purposed, most commonly fabric. The perfect fabric(s) are often a starting point that lead me to my subject matter. I work from photographs, so I am always exploring the world for new shots, and the re-imagination of the images from my camera into abstractions in fabric is endlessly exciting and fascinating. I am currently working on several series; the first is "Silk Piers" in which, using a newly-acquired collection of luminous silk gifted me by the NCSU School of Design, I'm creating glowing, geometric pieces anchored by heavy lines of stitch based on interior and exterior elements of the built environment. The other series is "Intemperance," an entirely abstract body of work based on more organic forms, that meditate on the subtle messages being delivered to us by our suffering natural world.
