Artist's Bio
Equal parts graphic designer and watercolorist living between Raleigh and Durham.
I am an artist, designer, climber, kayaker, and cheeseburger connoisseur living between Raleigh and Durham. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design, a minor in Art History, a concentration in Studio Art, and have over a decade of professional experience in graphic design with a focus on editorial and advertising.
My grandfather was a sign maker on Long Island, and he was my original inspiration, and I ended up working in two sign shops myself. My work ranges from the massive to the macro, from billboard designs and food truck logos, down to stationery and using magnifying glasses to photograph abstract watercolors.
Artist's Statement
Like the element water itself, watercolor will not be submissive or obedient; it does as it pleases. The little control it allows you is limited to preserving the white sparkle of the paper—gone once touched—and choosing pigments. It is the most unforgiving art medium for the control-freak. But when allowed that freedom, the water provides you with the ethereal effect that keeps eyes lingering, and doing so much of the work for me.
This is a fluid body of experimentation, based purely on light and color. Beauty to me is the back-lit glow of florals against a jungle of dark greens, the rainbow I see in a simple shadow, and the way pigments and minerals flow together in liquid suspension. I use these curiosities to explore landscapes, florals, urban sketches, and portraits, as well as more subjective abstracts and experiments. This is why I work in watercolor, and it is what drives me to create and share the outcome.
