Artist's Statement
Artist Statement I am an abstract, intuitive painter who uses acrylic paint and alcohol ink to create rich, vibrant pieces. My mother is also a painter so I grew up regularly going to museums and was always surrounded by the process of making art and the smell of turpentine. I do not have an idea of what I am going to paint until I start painting. My paintings come from my memories and there are many layers under each of my paintings to achieve what feelings I am aiming to portray. I use different mediums to give texture to my work and I use bold, big strokes and colors to give my paintings movement and purpose. I leave my paintings and come back to them many times before I feel they are “done”. I use bold colors to depict the beauty of North Carolina’s forests, beaches, marshes and skies. I feel both extremely stimulated and at peace when expressing myself through paint. I believe that color can have a very healing effect on the mind and body. I have always found looking at and making paintings to be incredibly cathartic. We are overstimulated by all of the information we receive online and we are losing our deep inherent connection to nature and one another. There has never been a more important time to make art, see art together, and to allow it to envelope us in its power and joy.
