About the event

Join FALC Master Artist Maureen Scullin for an engaging one-day workshop exploring portrait and figure painting through the renowned Zorn Palette—a limited palette approach made famous by Swedish master painter Anders Zorn.

Nationally recognized for her classical realism, Maureen Scullin creates compelling portraits, figures, and landscapes distinguished by their strong design, luminous color, and sensitive observation. A Detroit native, Maureen attended Parsons School of Design and she transitioned from a successful illustration career to fine art, building a reputation for work that combines technical excellence with emotional depth. Maureen is a member of prestigious organizations including the Portrait Society of America and Oil Painters of America.

Using a surprisingly simple palette of just four colors, students will discover how the Zorn method can produce a remarkable range of natural flesh tones, harmonious color relationships, and strong value structure. Through demonstrations and hands-on painting, Maureen will show how limiting color choices can actually strengthen color perception, simplify decision-making, and improve overall painting design. Students will learn how to mix convincing skin tones, establish accurate values, create atmospheric temperature shifts, and achieve a sense of unity throughout a painting.

Whether you are new to portrait painting or an experienced artist seeking to refine your understanding of color and value, this workshop offers valuable insights into one of the most respected approaches in representational art. The principles learned through the Zorn palette can be applied far beyond portraiture, providing tools that will strengthen all aspects of your painting practice.

Participants should bring a table top or floor easel in addition to the supplies listed above.
