About the event
I'm excited to announce my 2nd Annual Studio Painting from Photographs Workshop, coming to the Fine Arts League of Cary in Cary, North Carolina!
January 13-15, 2027
9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. each day
Wintertime is studio time for me-a chance to paint from the many photographs I took during the previous year when an on-site painting or study wasn't possible. During this intensive three-day workshop, I'll demonstrate my complete approach to creating a studio painting from a photograph. We'll cover:
• Taking a strong reference photograph
• Editing the photograph for a better painting
• Developing a successful composition
• Organizing values
• Understanding color temperature
• Using the photograph as a reference-not simply copying it
• Carrying plein air principles into the studio
I'll demonstrate the entire process from start to finish, and you'll paint along with me. My approach and strategy are very similar whether I'm painting in the studio or outdoors.
The workshop is limited to just 12 students, so early registration is encouraged!
