Artist's Statement
Debra Singer-Harter's artwork is about movement, texture, color, and people. In her abstracts, she uses broad moving brush strokes of paint, and overlaying textures to create interest, and keeps the viewers eyes busy to see something new with each read. And she uses color with movement to create a mood that reinforces this statement. With people, she brings their personality to the canvas along with the places they live and things they use. Her subject is often people because they define our times and provide context to how we live today.

Debra was born in Miami, Florida to second generation eastern European immigrants who influenced her art by talking about their life experiences and history in coming to America. As with many people striving to do better in life, her family always encouraged her to be responsible, independent, and creative. The family loved an imaginative life-style, and together they participated in theater as actors and went to museums every chance they had. These events influenced her artwork and her love for the human figure and life experiences.

She was introduced and encouraged, by family, to create art. However what really got her hooked to it was that art was amazing to look at, seemed hard to make, and few people she knew could teach her how to do it. Years later she is still learning, and luckily she has found some great teachers.

Because of the multiple mediums in which she works, they influence each other. Her realistic and abstract watercolors inform her oils and acrylics. Her pottery has portraits and abstracts. She moves from a mixed media piece of photography to a fabric work, a watercolor, or an oil. She loves to work in multiple mediums, they bounce off and reflect on each other and make for a fresh image. Imagination is piqued and the audience tells her all about it, which makes the piece fun.

She has always enjoyed making colorful paintings and pottery that people like to enjoy in their home and business. Today, she is introducing figurative scenes, expressionism, and abstraction into her art to create vibrant and creative visual experiences.
