Watercolor is my medium and marine and nautical subjects are my favorite. However, I also do many landscapes as well as other subjects too. Basically, I like the shape of things highlighted by strong lights and shadows.

This is an imaginary scene that would have been common in New England early in the last century.

John Sweemer

I graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago following World War II. Before finishing school I started working evenings at a commercial art studio and continued there full time until 1953. After that I became a free-lance artist. I had my own studio in downtown Chicago, being there 32 years altogether. After that I worked out of my home studio in Wheaton, and later in Warrenville, Illinois. Presently I work out of my home studio in Cary, NC, having moved there in May, 1997.

For many years it had been my desire to get into the fine art of watercolor painting. That began in 1978 in Illinois. A local, active art league became a source of inspiration. After many paintings and diligent effort, I became a signature member of The Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Presently I am also a signature member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and the Fine Art League of Cary, as well as the Triangle Artists Guild.

My favorite subjects for paintings are harbor and marine scenes. I enjoy landscapes and other subjects as well for a change and challenge. I have been blessed with the interest people have shown in my work. Many have said that my work looks so peaceful and relaxing. Thinking about that I realized it is because I have an inner peace that comes from the “God of all peace.” I thank my heavenly Father for the ability He has given me to visualize on paper that which I love to see and appreciate.

Most of my paintings are in private collections. Through galleries a great many of my pieces are in corporate and institutional collections. Locally, some of my work is shown through exhibits sponsored by the Fine Arts League of Cary and in Town of Cary Art festival, as well as galleries. I have been honored with many awards.
