Member Gallery Personal Web Page - Guidelines

In the Member Gallery each FALC member artist can showcase their work. These guidelines detail how to submit the images and information required for the webmaster to construct a gallery page.  Those who actively support FALC with their time also qualify to have an additional image on the site's entry page slide show.  See the Slide Show Guidelines below for details.

This page is printer friendly.  Should you wish to print it you may find our Printing Hints page helpful in setting up your browser's print function to get good printed copy on the first try.  It's 3 printed pages.  Use of the Print Preview function (in the browser's File Menu) is essential in assuring good printed copy.

Important:  The webmaster can't construct a gallery page without having all of the 7 items below:  Using input from the member the webmaster will construct the gallery pages, which will have an almost identical layout for all artists, and which will include the 6 items below in the order shown.  Items 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 can be submitted directly in the text of an E-Mail or by a text or Word document attachment to an e-mail message.  The images (item 3) can be sent as attachments to the same e-mail or delivered by some other means.  Please use the E-Mail link above - do not send your submission to the Webmaster E-Mail address.  If you do not have E-Mail please call 851-2542 and we will work out another way for you to submit your material.   Looking at any of the current individual gallery pages may help visualize how the first 6 items below are used.  The 7th item is also required, but it goes on the Member Gallery Page which is the index for all the gallery pages.  Please provide all 7 items.

1. The name of the artist as it to appear as the title for the page.

2. A maximum of fifty words in one paragraph about the artist's medium and preferred subjects, etc. If this material flows onto a fourth line it may be edited to three lines so that the images will show fully when the gallery page first loads.  Please, no biographical information here (See item 5).

3. Two images of the artist's work (See IMAGE DETAILS below).

4. Brief descriptions of work represented by the two images, including:

5. Freeform space (i.e. written and paragraph formatted by the artist) for additional information about the artist (a resume or biography) to a limit of what would fit on a single typewritten 8.5 by 11 sheet of paper. Note we want to keep the viewer's eyeballs on the work of FALC members.  Accordingly, the full address of other websites where the member's work is on display may be included here but only one link on the page (usually one to the member's web site at the page's bottom) will be a "hot link" like this one that takes you to the top of this page.

6. Contact information for the artist including the artist's name and at least one (or all) of the following:

7. A few words to go with the artist's name on the Member Gallery Page (Which is the index page for all of the gallery pages.)  These words must not exceed what will fit in the space beside the member's name.

To be included in the gallery please submit your images and the other information requested above.  Don't send more than two images for the gallery and, if you qualify (see Slide Show - Guidelines below), one additional image for the slide show.   E-Mail with attachments is preferred, but the information on a floppy disk or CD-ROM disk is OK also.

FALC reserves the right to refuse to post any image or written material without explanation as to the reason for the refusal.

Image Details: Images in any any image file format and at any file size up 500KB will be accepted.  The submitted images will be processed so that the images as posted will be in the .jpg file format with a maximum picture height of 275 pixels, a maximum picture width of 375 pixels, and a maximum file size of 40,000 Bytes.  This gives a picture on the screen that is a little less that 3" high by a little less than 4" wide at the maximum. This size allows two pictures to be placed side by side on the gallery page when viewed on modern computers and monitors.  This size favors the landscape format which best fits the screen.  Portrait images can be submitted, but they will be smaller in total area than landscape images.

Updating and Revisions:  To control the amount of work associated with maintaining the gallery the following posting limitations apply: The artist may post images of either work that is for sale (but without price information) or images representative of the type of work that they do (i.e. work previously sold or NFS). If a work sells after its image is posted on the site it then falls into the representative category.  To accommodate an artist's desired gallery page changes the Webmaster will make a maximum of two minor revisions or one major revision within a one year period if new images and/or information are submitted. When submitting revised text please cut the paragraph(s) to be revised from your gallery page and paste it(them) into a word or text processor.  Revise the paragraph(s) as you see fit and submit them following the procedure outlined above.

If you have digital photo capabilities please consider helping one of your less fortunate member friends get the images needed for their gallery page.

Slide Show - Guidelines:

To be included in the slide show on the FALC entry page a member must be an active organization officer, committee chair, or frequent volunteer worker in one or more of FALC's many activities. Frequent is defined as a minimum of 1 hour per month or a minimum of 12 hours during the past year. Members who meet this requirement should supply an additional image for the slide show. The image standards are the same as for the gallery pages, and the written information requested in Item 4 above is also needed for the image.

Digital Image Editors:

At the October 2007 FALC Monthly Meeting the Web Master gave a presentation about the FALC web site and Wiki, some helpful information about digital imaging and tips on using a Windows PC.  Here, complete with hot-links, is an on-line copy of the handout from that meeting.

There is a wonderful freeware image manipulating program for PCs called IrfanView that can be used to easily process your digital camera or scanner images.  In addition it's almost a full-power image editor which can straighten crooked images - crop the image to eliminate undesired areas around the edges - change brightness, contrast and color balance - sharpen dull images - and it has several more modes to enhance your images.  When you are on line you can download it here:

     http://www.snapfiles.com/get/irfan.html

If you download and use this program be sure to click on the Help button at the top of the page if you have any problems.  The help information is excellent.  Several people have had trouble using this program to crop an image because it's not apparent that the program is always in the crop mode.  The Crop section of the Help function explains this and steps required to crop an image.

The following have been suggested as graphics programs for non-PC users:

For Apple users:  Graphic Converter (Shareware - $30)

    http://www.lemkesoft.com/

For Linux users:  The GIMP (Freeware) (Note: There are also Windows and Apple versions.)

The webmaster has not used these Apple/Linux programs.
