Kathryn B. Launey was raised in a
household infused with art. Both of her parents were artists, and most
important occasions included art in some form or another. Picnics had
two baskets: one for food and the other for art supplies.
Vacation preparations were as much about papers, pastels and
crayons as they were about the shorts, shirts
and underwear. Parties might have included The Scribble Game
or Rorschach Interpretation.
Bored children were entertained with the
files of art. There were two: the family’s own (it had to be
spectacular to make it to “THE FILE”) or reproductions of masters.
There they were: two identical folders – the family art in one and Van
Gogh, Degas, Miro, Da Vinci, Cassatt, O’Keeffe, … in the other.
In the 1970s, Launey became an
award-winning needle artist. Quilting and needlepoint
predominated her artistic expressions while she raised her children.
Later, after a career in education and academic psychology, Dr. Launey returned to art. Mixed media is her preferred approach, focusing especially on hand-drawn and paper elements.
