Sonia Reilly Kane is a Virginia Tech graduate with a degree in
Aerospace Engineering and a former career in the Space Shuttle
program. Her passion for both space flight and art began at
her father’s kitchen table “art studio” while watching the Apollo moon
mission. Her first painting, at age nine, was inspired by
this event. Today, Sonia’s paintings blend the precision of her
engineering background with her love of the vibrant colors of nature
and the magic of sunlight, shadows, and reflections.
Sonia’s art training began in 1992 and includes classes and workshops
in drawing, colored pencil, pastel, watercolor, and oil at Sertoma Art
Center, Jerry’s Artarama, Wake Tech, Pullen Art Center, and private
studios. She began exhibiting her work in January 2006 at
Sertoma, followed by a solo show in May and June at the Woman’s Club of
Raleigh, a group show in July through September at Piper’s Restaurant
& Tavern in Cary, and a solo show in December at the Sertoma
Arts Center. She has exhibited at the Visual Art Exchange and
her painting, Lemon Over the Sea, was juried into the 2008 FALC Annual
Exhibit.
Sonia and her husband, Matthew, have raised their family in Raleigh and
made it their home since 1988.
