Deanne J. Hooker

My medium is watercolor.  I usually paint landscapes from photographs of scenic sites around the world taken by me or family and friends.  I have also done still life watercolors and lately I have also been commissioned to paint dog portraits.

My mother used to tell me that I was "doodling" before I even learned to walk. In elementary school I won a "Golden Key" art award, and in high school I took every art class offered and was chairman of all junior and senior art projects. I was voted "Most Artistic" in my senior year. I also was enrolled in drawing classes at the Art Institute of Chicago during my early teen years.

Later I enrolled in classes in oil painting and acrylics at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, as well as advanced private lessons in oils while living in Basking Ridge, NJ, and Houston, TX. While living in Basking Ridge I taught oil painting to adults for several years. Over the years I also worked as set designer for a number of theatrical productions at community theaters in Baton Rouge, Basking Ridge, and Houston.

After moving to Cary, NC, and retiring in 2000 after 25 years in the work force, I began working part-time on staff at Jordan Hall Arts Center. I decided to switch from oils to watercolor painting and began classes with Rocky Alexander at Jordan Hall. I have submitted watercolors in several group shows in Cary through the Fine Arts League of Cary. I also donated a watercolor garden scene to Western Wake Hospital Birthing Center as well as several oil paintings to The Carying Place Annual and Treasure Benefit Auction for the past two years and to the Komen NC Triangle Gardens for the Cure Silent Auction.

I had a solo exhibit of fifty three of my watercolors at Jordan Hall the month of April of this year where I was fortunate enough to sell seven paintings as well as three dog portraits which had already been commissioned. I have since had seven more commissions for dog portraits. Since May I have exhibited my paintings in several locations, i.e., doctors' offices, restaurants and coffeehouses. And I continue to show my paintings through the Fine Arts League of Cary.
