Printing Hints

This web site has a number of pages that are laid-out to be "Printer Friendly" so that they can be printed on one 8.5" by 11" sheet.   However, printing from a web page will not give good results unless the browser's printer settings are correct.  Just clicking the browser's Print Button may not give sufficient control over the printing setup to assure good printed copy on the first try.  Instead of using it, follow the steps below.  These hints are mostly specific to Internet Explorer.  However, other browsers should have similar previewing and resizing capabilities.

1.  Be aware that there are two different types of pages on this site.  Most of the pages are normal HTML pages where it's possible for the viewer to change the font size (Step #2 below) as required to help fit the page to the paper.  However, some pages (prospectus, Sketch Pad pages and the Artist Contract for example) are full-size images of the original 8.5 by 11 inch FALC printed material and changing the Text Size (font size) in step #2 below will not help to properly print these image pages.

2.  Set the browser's Text Size so that it is not too large for the copy to fit on the printed page.  This is done by left clicking on View (near the top of the IE window on the left side) and selecting Text Size and setting it to Medium.

3.  Left click File (also near the top of the IE window on the left side) and select Print Preview.

4.  In the Print Preview window if the page shows completely at the 100% size setting and if it is not partly covered with Header and/or Footer information it's ready to be printed.  Double check for any missing copy at the bottom of the page and for any copy that may have fallen onto a second page.  Be sure to use the 100% size not the 75% or the Shrink-to-Fit size.  Also, if there are sliders at the right side and bottom of the Preview window it's OK to use them to view all of the page as long as moving the view around allows everything on the page to be seen.

5.  Often the margins are set too large and/or Headers and Footers interfere with part of the copy and the complete page cannot be correctly printed without changing the Page Setup.  To do this close the Print Preview window, and then left click File again and select Page Setup.

6.  In the Page Setup window adjust (probably reduce) the margins and/or turn off (delete) the Headers and Footers as required to fit the copy into the Print Preview area.  It will probably require several iterations between Print Preview and Page Setup to get adequate margins.  Print only after everything looks OK in Print Preview at its 100% size setting.

7.  If these steps don't fit the copy onto the page in the Print Preview mode it may help with the normal HTML text pages to go back to step 2. and set the Text Size to Smaller.  This will probably result in a printed page that is somewhat smaller than the original.  Notes: Some of the site's pages contain sufficient material so as to require two or more printed pages, and, as noted above, Text Size changes will not be effective on the image based pages.

Note for Firefox browser users:  Firefox seems to have some built-in irreducible printing margin, so reducing all of the settable printing margins to zero may be required to properly print the prospectus and Sketch Pad image pages.
